The federal government shutdown is now reaching the one-month mark.

0:04.1

Lisa Desjardin joins us now on whether there's any progress towards a resolution.

0:08.4

So Lisa, what's the latest?

0:09.6

Where are talks?

0:10.6

On the surface, unfortunately, there really is no change in stance from leaders, but beneath

0:15.5

the surface talking to senators, there are member-to-member talks starting to begin, not yet about exactly how to

0:22.8

get out of the shutdown, but instead about how to deal with the spending problem that would

0:26.4

come after, how to keep government funded after the shutdown. But why is that important? It's a door

0:31.5

opening for discussions, perhaps create an avenue for people to talk. Essentially, we're almost

0:36.8

1:06.0

Here's what's coming up. This is a big factor. We know November 1st, some big ones. Tens of millions of Americans could face shortages in their benefits for SNAP, for WIC as we were reporting, also for Head Start, as I've been talking to some of those, open enrollment begins for the Affordable Care Act. And also look at this, November 5th next week, that's when we see the record being set for all-time shutdown. So what I'm watching for next week, Omna, cracks in the surface, do those cracks lead to maybe a way out next week or the week after?

1:46.3

What about the people affected by all this?

1:47.8

I know you've been talking to them.

1:48.9

How are they looking at this?
