This is CBS, I In The World, I'm John Batchley, the Wall Street Journal editorial, a very

good Republican presidential debate subhead. Without Trump, the candidates could fight

about their policies. I welcome John Fund, a colonist for national review, to measure

the first Republican debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Early yet, but still, great fund to see

the candidates present themselves carefully. John, a very good evening to you. The debate

strikes me as something early yet. It's summertime. We haven't gone back to school yet, but

here it is. Your measure of the overall two hours handled by Fox News. Were you pleased?

Were you irritated? Was there something missing, John? Good evening to you.

Well, for once we had the candidates themselves speak out on what they wanted and believed

rather than the pundits and all of the bloviators. So it's one year until the parties

nominate their candidates at conventions and it's 15 months until the country comes

together and elects another president. So I think that we can say the start of the campaign

was last night. And what I enjoyed was a, I think it was a better and more informative

and frankly, even more entertaining show without Donald Trump. And two, if Trump does

return in future contests, debate contests, at least we'll know what the state of the Republican

party would be without him, because he does loom large. On the other hand, the other

candidates should have a chance to speak out and make their presentation. I think half

of them did very well. The other half did quite adequately.

And as Sanis is the popular and well-known governor of Florida, well known to the Republican

party, not necessarily to the nation. He has been leading in the polls of the candidates

who were on the stage last night. Your opinion of his presentation. Was he cautious? Was

he aggressive? Was he out of his depth? How did you measure him, John?
