The contest for the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2024 is underway. Two debates done.

The Middle West, where the contest for the presidency is decided from Pennsylvania to Iowa is watching very carefully.

For the Republican Party, it will be Iowa first and then New Hampshire.

The rules are, traditionally, you do well in Iowa. You must emerge from New Hampshire to go nationally. You must survive New Hampshire.

I welcome Selena Zito, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the Washington Examiner of the New York Post,

because there are surprises in the first two debates. One particular surprise from the state of South Carolina.

Selena, Nikki Haley, why this surprise? What's happened? Good evening to you.

Good evening, John. Thank you so much for having me on.

I think we have to look at Nikki Haley's emerging in national spotlight, but also in the important first states of Iowa and New Hampshire in South Carolina.

As having two very, very good debates, she has come across as being able to take on her critics right now.

Her critics would be fellow Republicans, so that's always a sort of thing you have to nimbly navigate.

But she's also taken on her, she has shown voters that an aspirational side, right?

The part of an elected official that eludes a lot of them is the ability to show that you will take them to a better place.

And we will be part of something, all of us, everyone in the country will be part of something bigger than ourselves.

That is an inherent and important quality in Americans DNA. We'd like that attribute, but it can't be faked.

It can't be, you know, sort of choreographed.

And she does not do that and voters are taking notice when she talks about her skills in governing and her skills in foreign policy.
