Good evening. The show begins tonight in Saipan, the Northern Mariana's the 80th anniversary of the

landing by the Marines, the Army, and the Navy on Saipan Island, defended by more than 40,000 Japanese, Imperial Japanese Army, conscripts

from Korea, Okinawa.

The Japanese took horrendous casualties, hardly anyone left alive.

They fought beyond reason, convinced that the Americans would abuse them.

So did the islanders, 8,000 or so committed suicide. The US took 20%

casualties, campaign 24 days, remembering that at about the same time as D-Day.

D-Day was June 6th, this was June 15th, more than half a

world away and now it's back in the fight because Saipan, the largest of the Northern Mariana's, is very much on the target list for

soft power for the People's Republic of China, knowing that if they can dominate any of these

islands in the Northern Mariana's, they can limit the ability of the US to respond

to an invasion of Taiwan or persecution of the Philippines or worse.
