end of the war. However, I remember 1945 and 44 because my children, their grandfathers, served in the two battles I feature in tonight's program.

My wife's father, or Lieutenant J.T. Rossboro, served in the Italian campaign with an armor unit.

There is a bronze star up on the wall presented to him for reinforcing and providing

supplies to the column as it worked its way through the mountains towards what became the

battle for casino and then on from then to Rome. My father, Lieutenant Calvin R. Bachelor, 299th Combat Engineers, landing on Omaha Beach,

easy red, if you know the designations, in what was called a Gap Assault Team, the mission for

the combat engineers, half Navy, half army,

was to destroy the underwater obstacles early in the invasion, each hour plus an hour,

so that the big ships coming in with the high tide wouldn't get ripped apart.

That was the mission.

Didn't go very well because the fire was so brutal. They couldn't much deploy their C-4. And in any event, most of the troops who were landing were hiding behind the obstacles.
