I will, however, begin reading all the way back at verse 6 just so that I can keep some

context. We're picking up at verse 14 today and I'll be reading all the way through 29,

but I can't break it up like that. Verse 6, it is not as though God's Word had failed.

For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel, nor because they are His descendants,

are they all Abraham's children on the contrary. It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.

In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise

who are regarded as Abraham's offspring. For this was how the promise was stated.

At the appointed time I will return and Sarah will have a son.

Not only that, but Rebecca's children had one and the same father, our father Isaac.

Yet before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad in order that God's purpose,

in election, that is our hot Word right now.

Might stand not by works, but by Him who calls. She was told the older will serve the younger.

Just as it is written, it is pulling it out of Malachi chapter 1 in reference to the nations

that carried the name of Jacob and Esau, Jacob being the Israelites, Esau being the Edomites.

So you really need to look back. I need to say that much to you if you were not with us last week.

Jacob, I loved, but Esau, I hated. We talked about the danger of trying to attribute what we understand

is human emotions to God. And at the basic meaning of it, and we looked at it in a covenant context,

was, Jacob, I have chosen, Esau, I have not chosen. It says in verse 14, I will pick up right here today.

What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all. Some of your verses say God forbid.

For He says to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

It does not, therefore, depend on God's on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy.
