This episode is all about my girl This! with reflections on this year's Canadian Dog Agility World Team Tryouts. You are all part of Team This! and I'm sharing my goals, challenges, and joys. These same things can relate to whatever you're going through with your own dog. Never give up. At 20 months of age This! didn't even want to wrap a cone or do a tunnel. We've come a long way, and the story continues.
In this episode you’ll hear:
• An update on my Border Collie This! and our story so far.
• A debrief of our 2024 Canadian Dog Agility World Team tryouts.
• The 3 goals I had for the weekend at the tryouts.
• Why This!’s weave pole and dogwalk performance indicates her joy factor.
• How each of our five runs together at the tryouts went.
• Why we need to focus on fun and joy for any challenge with our dogs.
• Reflections on reviewing our dog training processes rather than our goals.
• Gratitude to everyone who tunes into Shaped by Dog for supporting Team This!

0:00.0 | Last weekend, I competed at the Canadian dog agility world team tryouts and I competed with |
0:06.8 | my dog this. Now, every dog I have ever tried out for the Canadian world team, for the |
0:14.4 | world championships of dog agilities, I have got on the team with each and every dog that |
0:19.9 | I've tried out with. But this, for those of |
0:22.3 | you who follow this podcast, you know my dog, this isn't just like every dog I've ever |
0:28.0 | owned. So, I thought today I give a little debrief about the experience that this he and I had |
0:33.5 | at tryouts and what my reflections are from that experience and how I think these reflections |
0:40.4 | are going to help each and every one of you that listen to this podcast that share your life |
0:45.1 | with a dog. |
1:02.0 | Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shaped by Dog. You know, it's less than a year ago that this ran her first ever agility trial and completed a run. Last year during the World Team tryouts, |
1:08.5 | I took her in the ring for each run and ended up playing |
1:12.4 | games with her because I just didn't feel like she was having as much fun as she could |
1:16.7 | have. She was still very overwhelmed because it was just a few short months since I discovered |
1:22.3 | her nutritional problems and how I could help her have more fun in training. You're not just training in dog |
1:29.0 | agility, but training for anything. And though life with this had been a struggle to train, |
1:37.0 | it never was a struggle to love the dog. I've always just been crazy about her, even before |
1:42.6 | she was even born. And so when I could tell early on that |
1:46.5 | she wasn't learning and progressing the way all of my other dogs, border collies or otherwise had, |
1:51.9 | I had to assess my goals. I had to assess my processes with her. And because it was those processes |
2:00.0 | that led me to the goals that I achieved |
2:02.3 | with my past dogs. |
2:04.2 | And so instead of saying I would like to get this dog ready for World Team Triouts when she's |
