to help us celebrate Independence Day with the story of the girl who got sucked into the dangerous

underworld of selling marijuana to grade schoolers. Carmen is a writer. She is a national treasure.

I love talking about this book with her because I feel like she is willing to join me in taking very

seriously something that seems very silly to many people because it is, of course, but which by

taking seriously lets us learn about what its author is saying without really meaning to

and revealing about the culture that embraced it and has never let it go.
