Summary

If you grew up with narcissistic or emotionally immature parents, you know the frustration of having all the head knowledge about healing but struggling to actually feel calm in your body. This episode explains why you learned to dissociate and live in your head as a survival mechanism during childhood trauma. We dive into how children of narcissistic parents take on too much responsibility and develop an inner adolescent part that resists guidance and change. Through practical breathing exercises, you experience what it means to get out of your head and into your body, connecting with your wise adult self rather than letting that defensive inner adolescent drive your life. 🚧 THE BOUNDARIES INTENSIVE: https://EmotionalBadass.com/boundaries 💖 PATREON: https://Patreon.com/emotionalbadass 👨‍👨 WORK WITH NIKKI 1:1: https://EmotionalBadass.com/coaching 📰 THE BI-WEEKLY WELLNESS NEWSLETTER https://www.EmotionalBadass.com/newsletter Learn more about your ad choices. getting out of your head after narcissistic parenting. All right, y'all.

Now, this might be a tiny but mighty episode.

This is the number one reason why you can't calm your body, why you can't feel what the knowledge in your head knows.

0:43.8

Because I know that you know that you're allowed to be calm, that you're allowed to feel safe, that you're allowed and ready and willing to shift out of survival

0:56.8

mode into thriving mode. But it's frustrating, right? All the podcasts you've listened to, all the books

1:04.8

you've read, all the things you have studied. And yet you just can't figure out why you can't make your body feel the peace,

1:16.3

the calm, the integration, the security that you know you are worthy of feeling, that you

1:24.1

know that you deserve because you would make a damn fine argument that anybody

1:29.4

especially a highly sensitive person with a big heart absolutely inarguably deserves and is worthy

1:38.8

of feeling grounded peaceful centered proud of themselves even good feelings, right, that we want to have.

1:48.3

So what is going on? Okay, here's what I want you to understand. If you grew up with a parent

1:54.3

who has some narcissistic personality disorder and you'd have to be a listener for a while to know this about me, but I very

2:03.6

much disagree with how mental health traditionally thinks about personality disorder. Of course,

2:10.0

I agree with the idea that in the extreme, there are people who are fully narcissistic.

2:16.6

There are people who are fully borderline. There are people who are fully borderline. There are

2:19.6

people who are fully dependent. There are people who are fully histrionic. But my field really looks at

2:27.9

those extremes with a real exclusivity that I think absolutely misses that we are talking about personality.

2:37.2

These are elements that are inside all of us.

2:40.8

And I am a believer that there are tons of people who have a slice of the pie of their personality,

2:50.0

not the whole personality, but a slice of the pie of their personality, not the whole personality, but a slice of the pie
