I'm John Batsler, Ukraine conflict.

One year in, the European Union part of the war because of NATO, part of the war because

of the energy challenge to Europe once the Russian natural gas pipelines ended and once

the burden of importing Russian oil moved to other sanctions.

However one year in, one year in is a good time to measure not only how we're doing but

how the specific leadership of the European Union and NATO is doing.

I look to Germany for the leadership.

Most recently the chancellor Olaf Schultz in Washington to meet with President Biden

of the US being the leader of NATO and a dominant trade partner for Europe.

And the version of the White House was that Olaf Schultz and Joe Biden are lockstep

with regard to Ukraine conflict.

But a year later there's reason to review where Germany is in this struggle.

The word Zytenvenda was used by Olaf Schultz in a speech to the Bundestag within days

after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

A year later I learned from Judy Dempsey the editor-in-chief of Strategic Europe, a free

subscription I hardly recommend because it is the European point of view many, many voices

from Eastern Europe to Western Europe, including the Global South as we will speak to.

The word has transformed from Zytenvenda a year later to Zytenvenda.

And I do not have the German other than grade school so I go to Judy to translate these

two words and what the change of presentation means for Germany in the second year of the

war.
