this CBS I on the world. I'm John Bachelor visiting with Jonathan Shanser.

He is a senior vice president of research foundation for the Defense of democracies.

The drones coming into Israel, an attack on a barracks aid, I believe recruits, and there were

KIA, there were lots of WIA. The drones seem to be escaping the Israeli

air defense. Is that because they're cheap like the Ukrainian? Is that because there's no known defense right now, Jonathan?

John, it's an interesting question. My understanding is that Iron Dome as well as Israeli

aircraft have been able to take out the vast majority of drones that have been fired at Israel.

I think there is maybe a question of bandwidth right now.

There's also a question of possible new variants of drones that may be engineered to evade the Israeli defense systems.

That's quite possible as well. I think the Israelis are now racking their brains trying to come up

with answers for what has happened. This was of course a devastating attack against a

barracks of the so-called Golani unit, four dead, something like five dozen injured.

A horrific attack from by any standard I think and the Israelis are reeling from it.

But again, I think it's important to understand that we have reached a new phase in this war.

It was always known that Hezbollah was going to be far more powerful than Hamas.

Hamas was a tactical threat.

Hezbollah is a strategic one.

They have a very large number of missiles and rockets and drones in their arsenal. They are able to

overwhelm Israel's air defenses and those air defenses have been depleted.

We've seen something like 12,000 rockets, drones, and missiles fired from both fronts.

So a total of 24, 25,000 so far since the war began a year ago.
