Israel's military says it's begun the first stages of its massive assault on Gaza City.

We are not waiting. We have begun the preliminary operations and the first stages of the attack

on Gaza City, and already now IDF forces are holding the outskirts of Gaza City.

When Israel's security cabinet first approved the takeover of the largest city in northern Gaza,

officials estimated the plan could take about five months on war.

But yesterday, Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, told the military to shorten that timeline.

The plans have sparked growing condemnation, both internationally and domestically,

over fears the starvation crisis in Gaza will only get worse.

And the UN is warning that cases of child malnutrition have tripled across Gaza in, quote, less than six months.

Joe English from UNICEF says more children will die unless the fighting ends.

We've said what we're seeing on the ground as UNICEF in humanitarian organisations

in the hope that it will make a difference and we will see increased amounts of aid getting in.
