Summary

The galaxy is an immense place, with billions of solar systems to colonize, and interstellar voyages to even nearby stars can take centuries. In order to explore and settle those new worlds, we may wish to take advantage of a type of generation ship that stops at planet after planet, colonizing each in turn, and entire colonial fleets that grow as they venture outward from Earth, creating new spaceships as often as terraforming new worlds. 0:29.9	So today we return to the Generation Ship series to look at what I tend to consider one of
0:35.6	the more likely scenarios for colony ships to other solar systems.
0:40.7	Under our current understanding of physics, the speed of light limits us to taking many years
0:46.0	to get to even the nearest stars, and even getting to a fraction of light speed is quite difficult.
0:52.3	This means any pioneers looking to settle the galaxy are
0:55.9	going to be old and gray before arriving, or long since dead. As we mentioned back in the first
1:02.2	episode, there's essentially five core methods of getting around this issue. One of those is
1:07.9	simply to settle new wars with the descendants of the original crew, the
1:12.1	classic generation ship. Another is to freeze the crew and revive them on arrival, what
1:17.9	we call a sleeper ship. We also have the seed ship and the data ship routes we discussed
1:23.9	last time in seeding the stars, and these two have a lot of overlapping concept.
1:29.8	The default seed ship settles worlds by using machines to go there and tail form the world,
1:36.3	and potentially even to grow humans in vats from frozen embryos and raise them, while the
1:41.9	data ship contemplates a more digital approach, potentially
1:45.3	simply bringing uploaded copies of human minds to a new world.
1:50.0	Of course the data ship has some overlap with the sleeper ship too, since those uploaded
