Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,

nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers,

but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on

his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1 verses 1 and 2. As a college professor at a Christian

university, I want my students to grow in their faith. I want them to see that theology is rooted in the Bible.

I want them to see that the Bible is their greatest source of life and guidance. Ultimately,

I want my students to love and understand the Bible. But this can be hard. In one class,

I illustrate the challenge by telling a fictional story

about students who become passionate about God's word. Their newfound zeal prompts them to set out

on the journey of reading the whole Bible in a year. As they begin, they fly through Genesis. Who

wouldn't? The story is compelling, the characters are intriguing, and many chapters play out

like an ancient soap opera. They move on to Exodus, and, well, at least half of it is engaging.
