The sorrowful comes out of two things.

One is my experience of growing up bilingual.

My parents were immigrants from Poland.

We didn't have a strong grasp of English when they arrived the United States.

As a child, I spoke only Polish at home and they're English in school.

Although there were some trials and tribulations along the way,

it took a long time for me to smooth out my accent.

Gradually, English took the field.

It became the language I used for education,

friendship, business, travel.

And yet, in some ways, it never became the language of my heart.

That was still Polish.

As useful as English was, and it is enormously useful.

It never spoke to me at the level of emotion, or even beauty.

But if I felt a certain sense of loss and not being able to use my mother tongue more often,
