Summary

This week, we’re bringing you an episode from the FT’s Behind the Money podcast: Battery maker Northvolt was supposed to be Europe's best hope for staying competitive during the green transition. But recently, that hope has crumbled. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November. The FT’s Nordic and Baltic bureau chief Richard Milne spent years reporting on the Swedish start-up and in this episode, he chronicles Northvolt’s ambitious rise, and what its failings mean for Europe’s battery industry. 1:20.8

It had a terrible name at that time, SGF Energy.

1:25.5

Nobody had written about it, but it was run by these two Europeans who used

1:30.6

to work for Tesla. So they were looking to be the first European company to build a gigafactory,

1:37.7

which is basically just a giant factory that makes batteries. Asia is leading the global battery industry at the time.

1:45.6

But this little Swedish startup wants to change that.

1:49.0

So their big pitch was to be the green European alternative

1:53.8

to the already sort of dominant Asian battery players.

1:59.0

You know, this is something that European industry needed.
