It has become fashionable for young people, especially those who are college educated to hit America.

And yet millions around the world want to live here.

Does that make any sense to you?

Either America is a horrible place or it's a wonderful land of opportunity. Which is it?

I think I'm very qualified to answer that question. I was born in Malawi, a small poor country in

Southeast Africa. The house I grew up in had no electricity and no running water.

My sister and I would walk sometimes for miles to get water for cooking and drinking,

which we carried home in big buckets on our heads.

My mother cooked an open fire.

We washed our clothes in a river.

I went to a government school. Sometimes we made under a tree because we didn't have a classroom or desks. My family didn't own any books.

I would search for scraps of newspaper that people had thrown away so that I could practice

reading and learn about the world. When I was 16 years old, I won a scholarship to study in the United States.

Until then, I had never been on an airplane or even been outside of Malawi.

After a bewildering series of flights, I arrived at Troy University in Alabama.
