Mark 11: 11-26 - 'The fig tree; the cleansing of the Temple.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 2610 (in 'Jesus teaches us how to pray') - Just as Jesus prays to the Father and gives thanks before receiving his gifts, so he teaches us filial boldness: "Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will." Such is the power of prayer and of faith that does not doubt: "all things are possible to him who believes." (abbreviated).

- 2840-2841 (in 'and forgive us our trespasses') - Now - and this is daunting - this outpouring of mercy cannot penetrate our hearts as long as we have not forgiven those who have trespassed against us. Love, like the Body of Christ, is indivisible; we cannot love the God we cannot see if we do not love the brother or sister we do see. In refusing to forgive our brothers and sisters, our hearts are closed and their hardness makes them impervious to the Father's merciful love; but in confessing our sins, our hearts are opened to his grace. This petition is so important that it is the only one to which the Lord returns and which he develops explicitly in the Sermon on the Mount. This crucial requirement of the covenant mystery is impossible for man. But "with God all things are possible."

Hi everyone. Welcome back to Daily Gospel Exegesis. As always, we're going to do a deep dive into the gospel reading from today's Mass. We really want to find what's the literal sense of

0:21.6

this scripture. What did it mean in its original context? Now today we have quite a long reading

0:26.4

and in many ways this is quite a difficult reading. When I first started to read through this one

0:31.6

and to prepare for the exegesis, I found it quite challenging. But as I really diving into these

0:36.9

commentaries, there's such an

0:38.3

amazing level of depth here. So I think this is going to be quite an interesting episode for

0:43.6

for a number of reasons. Well, firstly, it's quite a long one because there's a lot going on

0:47.4

in this particular scene. The lectioneer has decided to put a whole lot into one reading. And secondly,

0:55.4

there's a lot of Old Testament references that you may not be aware of. There's a lot of Old Testament stuff going on in the

0:59.5

background that you really need to understand if we want to get at the literal sense. And thirdly,

1:05.1

because the words here are some of Jesus most challenging and most sort of strange teachings

1:10.6

in a way. So,

1:11.4

hopefully you'll find a lot of interesting stuff in today's episode. So today's reading is from

1:16.7

Mark chapter 11, verses 11 to 26. After he had been acclaimed by the crowds, Jesus entered Jerusalem

1:26.5

and went into the temple. He looked all around him,

1:30.2

but as it was now late, he went out to Bethany with the 12. Next day as they were leaving Bethany,

1:37.6

he felt hungry. Seeing a fig tree in leaf some distance away, he went to see if he could find any fruit on it.

1:46.0

But when he came up to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

1:52.3

And he addressed the fig tree. May no one ever eat fruit from you again, he said. And his

1:59.0

disciples heard him say this. So they reached Jerusalem and he went

2:04.0

into the temple and began driving out those who were selling and buying there. He upset the tables

2:09.5

of the money changes and the chairs of those who were selling pigeons. Nor would he allow anyone to
