year here. We're going to begin with the latest on the new pope, the first American pope in history.

Leo the 14th, now the spiritual leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics. He's celebrating his

first mass as Pope this morning. And he spoke briefly in English saying this morning, I know I can rely on all of you to walk with me as we continue as a community.

We have team coverage around the world from his hometown of Chicago to Villanova University to Peru.

But first, World News Tonight anchor David Mears starts us off from the Vatican.

Good morning, Michael, George, Rebecca. It is difficult to put into words the magnitude of the history we witnessed here in St. Peter Square.

From the moment we saw that white smoke in the small metal chimney right there above the Sistine Chapel, that temporary chimney they put in place

for the conclave. It won't be there much longer, though still there this morning. We're

also learning this morning what was playing out inside the Sistine Chapel right after they

elected the new Pope. They were applauding him in that room. He was then taken to the room

of tears where he chose from one of the cassocks hanging there. And then he was walked down the hall of blessings to make it to the balcony here.

150,000 people were gathered here at the streets of Rome and in the square.
