Thanks to listeners, our show goes on today, even now that Congress has voted to take back federal funding for public media. Here are today's top stories. It's Friday, July 18th. Our budget has become one of our top stories today. Congress cut all federal funding to

public media in a vote last night. It's a blow. But there's a glimmer of good news today. Today,

KOWW held a break glass fundraising drive to make up the $1.4 million we would have gotten from the federal

government. And we're humbled to share, we've reached our goal and met the match to replace

our federal funding across the next 12 months. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone

who supported KUOW in the last couple of days. This surge of support will keep us strong

as we plan for the future. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was KUOW's largest sustaining donor

and will need to permanently replace our lost funding year after year. So stand with us by becoming

a monthly member at KUOW.org. On to news, a federal judge in

Tacoma has temporarily barred Washington State from enforcing a new law against Catholic priests.

It would have required them to report evidence of child abuse, even if that evidence came to light during

religious confession. The state's Catholic clergy sued to block it, and federal judge, David

Estolito, agreed. He said those clergy members would be forced to choose between the requirements

of their faith and violating the law. The Trump administration also intervened in support of the clergy.

Some immigration news today, federal officials have released four Portland children who were put into

immigration detention two weeks ago. The U.S.-born children and their mom were detained at

Peace Arch State Park near the U.S. Canada border while visiting family.

Their father was detained a few days later.
