Summary

Bruce’s highly anticipated annual Freaks List is out. He gives some insight into what separates a “freak” from just a standout player, and highlights some of the most jaw-dropping athletes on this year’s list. Later in the show, Stew and Bruce react to the first preseason Coaches Poll: who’s getting too much love, what highly ranked team could have been ranked even higher, and more.

Welcome to the Audible presented by Trader Joe's. I'm Stuart Mandel, joined, as always by Bruce Feldman. We are going to take a little bit of a break from the buy-sell hold game. Don't worry. We have not forgotten the Big 12.

Bruce, a couple things we want to get to today. But first, notice you're getting this episode in your feed a day earlier than you've probably been used to this off season. That's because it's August. The season is almost here.

0:36.9

So this is when we

0:37.9

switch to our twice a week schedule. And you can expect those episodes to hit your feed this month

0:44.0

on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also the coaches poll, the preseason coach's poll came out. We want to

0:51.1

dive into that as well. But first, we were recording this on Monday and Monday,

0:55.8

happened to be a big day of the year. Bruce's calendar. It's the freaks list. I know it's a lot of

1:00.7

work. How are you feeling to see it up there finally? I feel good. I'm kind of honestly drained

1:06.0

because I feel like this is, especially for like the last three weeks, it becomes seven days a week

1:13.5

and I don't know, it's something I'm like kind of picking at morning tonight.

1:18.7

So I don't want to make it out like it's not brain surgery and it's not like I'm doing

1:23.7

heavy lifting.

1:24.8

But at the same time, it's just constantly trying to check in with people

1:29.6

to get updates, to get whatever, kind of staying after people. So much of it is dependent on

1:36.2

strength coaches and the guys I've talked to. But to get towards the finish line, and you always

1:42.6

feel like you're going to leave a few people out.

1:45.5

And then it's just sorting it out. How do you get to this year's 101? How do you decide who's

1:50.9

29 and who's 55 and who's 80? Like there's no, obviously no science behind it. But it's a fun project to work on because there's just a lot

2:02.6

of guys I find out about that maybe I've heard of, but I didn't realize who they, you know,

2:08.7

what they've become or, you know, who the coaches really, it's just a really good window into a lot

2:15.1

of these programs because of the conversations you end up having with a lot of coaches.

2:18.9

So I know you've been doing it for 20 years, but there might be people listening right now who are like, what is the freaks list?
