Summary

Kayla is joined by theater director and podcast producer Jenna Burnett to discuss their shared love of true crime stories. But how do we approach telling these stories involving very real people ethically and as honest to their own truths as possible? These are the waters Jenna has navigated producing her show “Under Cover of Night '' which uncovers the real mystery surrounding the death of a British expat woman living in Athens, Texas during the 80s and 90s.

Hey guys, it's Kayla. I'm so happy you're able to join us today because we are all still

0:13.3

so directionally challenged. We thought we'd have it all figured out by the time we were

0:17.6

in our 30s. But surprise, we don't. And that's okay. Well, today we're going a little creepy,

0:24.6

a little eerie, a little spooky. When you stop to think about it, these creepy stories are all

0:29.6

around us and they happen all year round. Why are we so obsessed with the paranormal and the

0:35.8

true crime that is out there every day? What is it that we can't get enough of? Well, the truth

0:41.2

is every person has a story, but what happens when each person's version of the same story is

0:46.1

so different? Who was Sue Knight? And why did she disappear? Suicide with no, suicide

0:53.5

note, no one has seen the body. There is a true crime podcast called Undercover of Night

0:59.2

that Jenna Burnett our guest today and her colleagues produced at Spoke Media. And we are

1:04.8

going to dive into that and our love of true crime and so much more. So without further ado,

1:10.3

here is my conversation with the lovely Jenna Burnett. I'm here with Jenna Burnett. She is

1:18.6

incredible. I am a huge fan of her podcast and I had to have her on. Jenna, this is our fun

1:25.5

little spooky Halloween episode and we are going to talk everything true crime. Jenna, you have a

1:30.9

wildly popular podcast that is called Undercover of Night. And it was recommended to me on Apple

1:38.2

Podcasts because it was so wildly popular and I fell in love with it. So before we dig into all

1:44.2

the details, can you tell our listeners a little bit about what your podcast is all about?

1:49.9

Yeah, absolutely. So I've really been referring to it as more of a true mystery than a true crime

1:55.7

story because it's definitely not your standard murder investigation, but it does start with a

2:01.2

death. So it centers around this woman named Sue Knight. She lived in Athens, Texas in the 80s and

2:07.1

90s and she died very suddenly and unexpectedly. In 1996, she was only in her early 40s.

2:15.1

And really, our way into her story was through the executor of her estate, Steve Barkstale,
