Summary

The injuries to Fabinho and Joel Matip may ultimately change things but for a long time in this transfer window it has appeared that Liverpool will not sign a centre-back in January. So where do they really stand in terms of football finances in a week that has seen them climb into the top five in the Deloitte Money League, moving above Manchester City? Matt Addison is joined first by football finance expert Kieran Maguire and then by the Liverpool ECHO's football and business writer Dave Powell to discuss the latest economic situation at the Reds. On the agenda are Nike, Kylian Mbappe, transfers, Anfield, revenue and more as the guests provide insight into the situation - and whether the current scrutiny of FSG is justified. The show concludes with a chat about Billy Beane and RedBall Acquisitions, with a deal to sell part of FSG to the company having now collapsed, and also the Boston Red Sox and how John W Henry and Co have coped with the pandemic at their other major sports enterprise, with reference to how that could be applied at Liverpool.*Please note this podcast was recorded before Joel Matip sustained ankle-ligament damage in the 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur.Watch and subscribe to our Blood Red videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BloodRedLiverpoolFCJoin our Blood Red podcast group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1656599847979758/ Learn more about your ad choices. Liverpool aren't going to sign a central defender this January but how big a risk

0:26.3

would that be financially and are they being overly cautious? Well we'll get

0:30.3

started straight away and dive into some of the topics we're going to go into,

Kiran.

I hope you're well.

0:36.1

Let's start with the obvious question.

0:37.1

I mean, how bigger risk is not signing somebody this month for Liverpool?

0:41.8

And if they were to miss out, say say on the Premier League title or on the top four how much would they then stand to lose?

0:48.0

Qualifying for the Champions League is far more of a critical issue than winning the Premier League because, as we saw with

0:57.4

Liverpool's finances in 2019 when they won the Champions League, it was worth over a hundred million in TV money.

1:05.2

They then had seven home games at Anfield, which realistically were bringing in another 30

1:11.5

plus bonuses from sponsors for getting that far. So top four is essential from a financial

1:19.1

perspective when you're a club of the caliber of Liverpool and you've got the overheads that go with that.

1:25.5

So I think that will be the focus and Nurgen Klop has been hinting at that in some of his recent

1:30.6

interviews. Therefore, investing in players always has benefits in

1:39.2

the sense that it can reinvigorate a squad, but it comes at a financial cost.

1:44.4

Liverpool do have the ability to go out and buy a player.

1:48.5

That for me, because of no doubt,
