I'm David Ferrier, a New Zealander accidentally marooned in America, and I want to figure

out what makes this country tick.

Now, as you may recall from the bear's episode of Flight This Bird, I discovered that America

is very different to New Zealand and that it's filled to the brim with terrifying animals

that can kill you.

Snakes, mountain lions, bears, we don't have any of that stuff back home.

So you can imagine my fear when I waited into Florida, home to 2,000 crocodiles and a whopping

1.25 million alligators.

There's also some tragic news tonight from Fort Pierce, Florida where an 85-year-old woman

was killed in a rare alligator attack.

Florida started tracking alligator attacks in 1948, since then there have been over 400

and over 2 dozen deaths.

Each year, about 8 people get bitten by a gator in this state of Florida.

Near her home in a retirement community this afternoon, an 85-year-old woman was walking

her dog along the water's edge.

Parified neighbors say the alligators suddenly sprung from the water and dragged her back

under.

Of course, relative to the population of both people and big lizards attacks a rare, but

they're less rare than in New Zealand where we have exactly zero of them.

Florida is also the only place on the planet where you can find both crocodiles and alligators

coexisting in the wild.
