Summary

Talk Art special episode with WePresent! We meet artist FIZA KHATRI to discuss their recent paintings. Their work represents intimate portraits and gatherings of human and nonhuman inhabitants of their community. They remix imagery from lived experiences, imagined fantasies, sacred landscapes, and archival research to imbricate the social, sacral, and political stakes of building ecosystems of cohabitation.

Fiza Khatri was born and grew up in Karachi, Pakistan. They currently live in New Haven, CT and are an MFA candidate at the Yale School of Art in Painting and Printmaking.

Russell Tovey is WeTransfer’s third Guest Curator across 2023 where he spotlights LGBTQIA+ artists that have inspired him. The selected artists of the Guest Curatorship have been given a platform on WePresent, the arts arm of WeTransfer, and on these TalkArt episodes.

As part of this collaboration, WePresent will also launch Russell Tovey’s documentary Life is Excellent and present a tour of four performances of BLUE NOW, a live version of Derek Jarman’s film BLUE directed by Neil Bartlett and performed by Russell Tovey alongside three other performers.

0:09.0	And I'm Robert Diamond. And this is Talk Art.
0:11.0	Welcome to Talk Art. How are you today, Robert?
0:14.0	Today, Russell, I am feeling like a pro-tagonist.
0:19.0	Oh, okay.
0:20.0	In a story, perhaps autobiographical story, but also autofiction is a word which I have read.
0:29.0	We have read being associated with today's guest work.
0:32.0	And it got me thinking about the blurring lines between what you may imagine versus what your actual reality is,
0:39.0	and how the two blur in everybody's everyday actual existence,
0:44.0	and sometimes we tell ourselves stories of how we're experiencing things
0:49.0	as a way of surviving, I guess, through the world that we experience before us,
0:55.0	which at times can obviously be very traumatic.
0:57.0	And the thing I've always loved about art is that I feel like figurative painting in particular
1:02.0	can really take me on a journey through other people's autobiographies and their stories.
1:08.0	And I think that's one of the things that first drew me to art.
1:11.0	And today's guest grew up in Karachi, Pakistan, and is an artist that you know very well
1:17.0	because you curated an exhibition at Grim Gallery in London, which included one of their works.
1:22.0	And it was the work in the show for me that resonated the most.
1:25.0	And I almost wanted to buy it, but I couldn't make it.
1:28.0	People didn't think it was you at one point.
1:30.0	They did. I even had people in the bars.
1:32.0	Precisely. So the auto fiction there kind of was a real thing.
