I'm a lactation consultant in North Carolina.

I have had several instances of moms asking me to teach them how they can relax so that

they can feed their babies.

A lot of these moms are people that can't get specialty formulas for their babies, but

they're several months out and at that point breastfeeding usually can't be restarted very

easily.

I think a lot of moms in the community that can't get the formula that their babies need

with sensitive tummies or with allergies and we need to get this crisis in order because

babies are going hungry.

There's a nationwide baby formula shortage and it continues to leave families scrambling

to feed their children.

The shortage was initially linked to supply chain issues and labor shortages, but in February,

Abbott Nutrition, a major baby food manufacturer, shut down its Michigan plant and recalled three

of its formulas.

This came after a U.S. food and drug administration inspection found bacteria near production lines.

Abbott Nutrition and the FDA announced an agreement to reopen the company's closed

Michigan formula plant.

We reached out to Abbott to be part of this conversation.

They declined, but it's an statement that we'll get to later in the show.

In the meantime, 43% of formula is sold out nationwide as retailers struggle to keep formula

on the shelves.

That's according to data assembly, which collects real-time data on retail and grocery services.
