Summary

I’m sharing a personal story from one of the most challenging seasons of my life—balancing the intense demands of medical school with training for the CrossFit Games, all while navigating grief and major life transitions. A pivotal conversation with my mom forced me to pause and ask a question I had never truly considered: Why was I doing all of this? What followed was a powerful realization about the role of purpose in sustaining us through life’s most difficult moments. I hope this reflection encourages you to examine your own "why"—and to rediscover meaning in the things that matter most. 0:35.9

powerful experience that I had showing me just how important

0:41.5

our deep sense of purpose and meaning can be.

0:45.9

And so you may have heard me before talk about a particularly stressful time during my life.

0:52.9

And this was during my first year of medical school,

0:56.4

while I was also training to compete in an international sport called CrossFit. Now, there was a lot

1:04.3

going on. Obviously, those two are big endeavors in and of themselves, but also there was a lot of

1:10.4

transition during this time period.

1:12.4

I had graduated from college, moved to a new city, started medical school, also training

1:18.6

and competing for this competition, which fell within that same time frame. And I had lost my

1:25.0

grandmother, who I was very close to, and then unexpectedly, my uncle also, who

1:30.5

passed away in a plane crash. And so there was a lot happening in a short amount of time,

1:37.0

and I certainly did not have the tools and the emotional capacity to be able to process

1:42.0

all of this. So it became very difficult. And I

1:46.1

developed physical symptoms at that time. And as I started to come out of this period and process

1:52.7

some of those emotions, I still was finding myself with very little motivation to continue with

2:00.8

my CrossFit training. So I would find myself

2:03.7

where I used to really enjoy going to the gym and enjoy pushing myself hard in my training.

2:08.1

I was finding myself driving to the gym and just sitting in the car and crying and then
