Summary

In just two days, Americans will wake up to a stark reminder that they live in a nation divided: roughly half the country will have cast a ballot for a candidate whose vision for America is fundamentally different than their own choice. Ravi takes a step back to discuss this reality, reflecting on the deeply personal nature of political divides and emphasizing the importance of civility and empathy in the days ahead. He then welcomes Iowa State Rep. J.D. Scholten to dive into the shocking new poll results from legendary Iowa pollster Ann Selzer. J.D. shares his take on what's driving independent and senior women to the polls, how economic and agricultural hardships have influenced rural voters, and what it all means for Election Day. And in a little bit, we're going to hear from a friend of mine who's an elected official down in Iowa or over in Iowa, who's going to talk all about this Des Moines Register poll from Anne Seltzer.

And the question that has been captivating social media over the past 48 hours, which is Ken Kamala Harris,

actually compete in Iowa in this final stretch. So we'll get there. But I'm going to do something

0:27.3

a little different today. I was thinking about what message I would want to leave with you,

0:32.3

the audience ahead of this absolutely consequential election that we're facing tomorrow. And we've been on a journey

0:38.4

together. You know, some of you are Trump supporters, some of you are independent, some of you are

0:41.8

RFK, some of you are Harris. Some of you might not even know yet what you are at the time of this recording.

And so I wanted to take it back and I wrote this thing that I never published. Back a couple years ago,

0:56.4

I was writing a book about my experience running schools in the South and then working in politics

1:00.4

and all that. And I never did anything with it. Maybe one day I will, but I had this intro to the book

1:06.2

that talks about where I was on Election Day 2016 and what my experience that day was. And I'm going to

1:13.5

read an excerpt of this for you because I think it gets to some of the ethos of what we're trying

1:19.0

to do here at the last debate, but also just how I'm feeling today, which is very similar to how

1:24.5

I was feeling that day two cycles ago. So I'm going to read this for you.

1:29.3

On November 8th, 2016, I woke up in Jackson, Mississippi, and hopped in my car to drive seven hours to Nashville to cast my vote.

1:35.3

As CEO of Republic, I shuttled between these two cities every other week and came to enjoy the long drives as largely uninterrupted opportunities to think. By that point,

I was responsible for managing six schools with over 100 staff, roughly 700 kids, and thousands of

1:50.4

parents. When I wasn't driving or sleeping, I was dealing with one emergency after another. A hurt

1:55.3

child, the disgruntled parent, or a hostile school board member. Those drives were the closest

1:59.9

things to meditation I had.
