Hello, everyone, and welcome to Slashfilm Weekly. It's Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, and on today's

0:04.9

episode of the show, we're going to be talking about Final Destination Bloodlines, the Apple TV

0:09.4

plus show MurderBot, and the latest film and TV news. My name is Ben Pearson. I'm an editor

0:14.8

at Slashfilm.com. And before we get into Bloodlines, we're going to kick off today's show with the

0:19.4

discussion of the Final Destination franchise as a whole. Joining me for this segment, our slash film editor,

0:24.9

BJ Colangelo. Hi, hi, hi, uh, and staff writer Bill Brea. Howdy. All right, so BJ, I know

0:33.0

why you love the Final Destination movies. You actually say that in the interview that we're going to hear in just a little bit. But Bill, what is your relationship to this franchise and why do you like these movies so much? I was a huge X-Files fan growing up, as a lot of people in my generation were, of course. And I think it was, well, I know it was definitely through my connection with just learning the names of the writers on that show, James Wong and Glenn Morgan specifically that when the first final destination came out in 2000, I was like, oh yeah, those are the X-Files guys. I should see that. And it just had, you know, everything that I wanted from it in terms of hearing about the premise of a premonition that causes a boy to get some himself and some of his friends off of a plane that then explodes in midair and, you know, what happens after that and all that.

1:21.2

So, yeah, it was a mixture of the the schlock element plus the intellectual sort of obviously the Rubik Goldberg

1:31.1

element but also just a philosophical interest in terms of what if you did have this experience

1:38.4

and would there be any possibility of escaping your fate if you're able to slide past it for the first time

1:44.7

sort of thing. So, yeah, it was an interesting, yeah, mix of both lowbrow and highbrow to me.

1:50.1

That philosophical idea is one of the most fascinating components of this franchise to me.

1:56.2

And BJ, I was wondering what you thought about how that idea is continually explored over the course of now six movies?

2:04.5

Because that's something that maybe on its face you wouldn't necessarily think they would be able to stretch this out that much.

2:12.2

You know, like the idea of fate versus destiny and, you know, how much can one person actually alter their own fate and all of that?

2:21.8

Like, the ideas underpinning this franchise have been surprisingly durable, I think.

2:27.1

So what do you think about that component of this franchise?

2:28.7

I think that's actually the key to why this franchise works as well as it does because it for a movie series

2:36.6

that is so centered on absolutely just obliterating people in some of the most extravagant

2:43.6

ways we've ever seen it is ultimately about why one person has value and why you have no idea what your place in the world is doing,

2:54.4

like why it's important. And the franchise has just continued to act and build upon it.

3:01.3

Because in the first film, we're really looking at Alex Browning and his classmates that he
