I'm Catherine Rampel in for Stephanie Ruhl. It is day 285 of the second Trump administration and day 31 of the government shutdown, which is now just a few days shy of the longest shutdown in history.

It is also the night before a halt in federal funding for SNAP,

food stamps, the nation's largest anti-hunger program. This week, several states sued the Agriculture Department to keep that money flowing. And earlier today, a federal judge in Rhode Island

ordered the administration to continue paying for SNAP out of a contingency fund,

while a Massachusetts court gave the government until Monday to indicate whether they would provide

full or partial benefits.

Tonight, President Trump responded on his social media platform saying that he would be

honored to fund food stamps if the court gives him clarification on how to legally do so.

He also acknowledged that assistance may still be delayed, but that's not the only critical

program hanging in the balance right now. Tomorrow, funding ends for Head Start locations

serving 65,000 children nationwide. We will get into the devastating consequences of all of that in just a minute.

But first, as the pain caused by the shutdown reaches what Senator Josh Hawley called a point of absurdity,
