Any one of which is rare enough, but remarkable when found in a single person.

A compelling voice for human equality and dignity.

He was a historian, an editor whose work bears our consideration even now.

Perhaps, especially now.

In 1922 of Abraham Lincoln, he wrote,

Abraham Lincoln was a poor southern white, poorly educated and unusually ugly, awkward, ill-dressed,

cruel, merciful, peace-loving, a fighter, despising Negroes and letting them fight and vote,

protecting slavery and freeing slaves.
