Summary

Today, the EU is altering its travel restrictions in two big ways. Firstly, it is recommending a change in how member states manage travel restrictions, and altering the focus to the individual, away from the region of departure. Secondly, all member states are shortening the validity of Covid-19 vaccination certificates to 270 days (nine months) across the bloc. Up to now, the EU has been recommending travel restrictions based upon the situation in the departure region, area or country. As of 1 February, it is recommending that these Europe travel restrictions be replaced with restrictions based upon the traveler’s situation.

I take you through the new rules and what they mean in practice, while also explaining some of the inconsistencies still remaining in international travel.

Hello, I'm Simon Calder and thanks for joining me for today's independent travel podcast,

0:07.9

bringing you the latest news on travelling, whether you're just dreaming of a great escape,

0:12.7

looking forward to one, or, in my case, just got back from a fantastic long weekend in the

0:18.6

beautiful nation of Northern Ireland. Well, first of February is when

0:24.9

everything changed, but then not much changed across Europe. Let me explain what has happened

0:32.8

and indeed what hasn't. The European Union has decided that it's really time to have some kind

0:41.4

of consistent common rules right across the EU so that European travellers can get around

0:50.4

within the 27 nations of the EU and indeed people like us from outside can go in

0:56.6

and travel around and get out and have some reasonably consistent rules. The most significant

1:03.2

thing that I've taken away from this is that travellers will be recognised as fully vaccinated

1:08.2

for only nine months after their last jab.

1:13.3

That's effectively what the EU is promising as part of their coordinated approach to facilitate safe free movement during the pandemic.

1:25.6

They say, effectively, that after nine months, you will not be able to

1:32.7

enjoy the same protection from your vaccination and therefore your validity expires. And this is

1:40.7

obviously a way of encouraging people to get boosters while of course keeping us all safe.

1:47.9

They say that, yeah, we're going to continue to have this map of Europe compiled by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

1:58.5

This has green, orange, red or dark red. And there will be the

2:04.5

emergency handbrake rule that will be allowed to be applied to restrict travel if necessary.

2:13.2

However, as I may have pointed out before, all EU countries are sovereign, particularly

2:19.6

when it comes to health, and therefore these are only recommendations.

2:24.4

One country which has already signed up for the final dose within the past 270 days rule

2:32.1

is Spain, by far the most popular country for UK citizens. And I'm
