Hello everyone, welcome back to the Epic Gardening podcast. Today we are back with Jacques.

0:19.1

What we're talking about today, we know Jacques is a man after flavor in the garden.

0:23.7

Primarily, flavor first. Myself, I'm getting there. I have a lot of other reasons I like

0:29.4

to grow as well and so it all kind of blends. I don't know that I could say one is the first one,

0:34.0

but we are going to talk today about some varieties that we both like for, specifically for their

0:41.9

flavor. There probably will be other benefits as well. But I'll go ahead and start. So I started out

0:48.7

what 12 tomatoes in the backyard and different varieties. So cherries, slicers, beef steaks,

0:54.5

and in the four major beef steak area, there's three that are producing and actually producing

1:00.0

these huge beef steak tomatoes. One has yet to actually set fruit, which is frustrating,

1:05.7

but the one that's done the best, both from a production standpoint and from a taste, is this

1:10.7

one called Beauty King. So it looks beautiful. It's yellow and red striping, vertically stride it

1:17.9

down the faces of the tomato. It's firm in its flesh and it's sort of is almost a little bit

1:24.4

of a citrusy undertone and then the classic slicing beef steak tomato. And so for me, I think, okay,

1:31.8

well, for sure that one goes in the garden next year and then maybe my second pick will go in.

1:37.5

And then the next year, I'll mix in two other beef steaks to like try to find the next winner.

1:42.7

And it sounds like you kind of do a somewhat similar thing and I was wondering if you had any

1:47.5

flavor picks, I guess. Yeah, sure. So I mean, I also this year went hard on variety because

1:54.9

I want to find what we think is the best tomato. And you know, quick caveat, it's very subjective

2:02.7

because you know, tomato could be very sweet, it could be very rich, it could be tart. For us,

2:08.7

we kind of like this mix of more of like an umami kind of a little bit of sweetness, but definitely

2:14.4

a little bit of tartness. So currently one of our top favorites is the Cherokee Purple. And I'll say

2:21.1

that the Cherokee Purple not only is really delicious, but it's also the earliest producer for me
