Thinkers. I'm your host Samantha Faye, and I'm Deb Bowen. And we're so happy that you've joined

0:10.4

us today. We are going to spend the hour talking about Emmanuel Sweetenburg. You all might have

0:15.9

heard of him, I think most of us have. He is a mystic from the 1600s. I spent the holiday diving

0:22.4

into who this man is. I've read several of his books, but I decided to read his biography.

0:29.4

A lot of the research I did is based on a biography that was written about him by one of the

founding members of Blondie. Debbie Harry? Not Debbie Harry, no, Gary. I just think it's so cool that

0:44.2

you know this awesome cool rocker is also super into spirituality and all things metaphysical. So I

1:21.6

teach you all about it. There you go. So that's how Emmanuel was raised. But the time his dad died

1:27.6

when Swedenburg was 47 and had already achieved much success as a scientist. His dad hadn't shown

1:34.0

any interest where pride in his son's work. One biographer described his dad as self-righteous,

1:39.5

self-occupied, and self-deceived. For example, how did you like to receive this as a Christmas gift?

1:45.2

Jasper wrote his biography, a staggering 1,012 pages, and presented it to his children as a gift.

1:51.8

Yikes. Yeah. Now, Emmanuel's mother died when he was eight. His father soon remarried another wealthy

1:59.1

woman who by all accounts was incredibly kind and loving. So he had a good upbringing. He was very

2:04.6

smart as a child and began taking university classes when he was just 11 years old. As a child,

2:11.3

he often spoke of unseen playmates that he called the boys in the garden. His parents were shocked by
