As a matter of fact, one compliment that I received that I consider to be a great compliment

came from a man who was around me on a fairly regular basis when I was

coaching. Doug Melvin was the general manager for the Milwaukee Brewers, my first four years

when I worked with them. And there was a time the two of us were standing behind the fence,

watching a spring training game and having a conversation about various things, and the conversation moved to pitchers and injuries and surgeries and the like.

And then Doug asked me, would you have any interest in being in the operating room for an

elbow or a shoulder surgery? And my response to him was absolutely. And that's when he paid me a

compliment. He said something along the lines of, that doesn't surprise me. You are a very curious person.

That said, sadly, when I was younger, my interest in learning was not what it should have been.

The Lord blessed me with a good mind. Not so much now, but then a very good mind. But I really didn't
