Summary

The Highwire’s ‘Ex-Vax Files’ Series continues with the story of former firefighter, Nick Gauthier, a 34-year-old father of three, severely injured by a tetanus shot a few months ago. Nick, a PhD trained audiologist has been diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, ADEM and hearing loss, and is unsure if he will be able to work in the career he loves ever again. Here, he shares how his life has been turned upside down.

This is the story of Nick Gothier. He was an all-American man who did his best to take care of his family.

Throughout my life I never liked to sit down. I was always on the go playing sports, working with my hands.

When I was about 19 years old, I joined a fire department. I was a firefighter for about six years.

When we arrived in Texas about six months ago, I felt just on top of the world. It was just perfect.

Nick had his dream job. He was so happy. He'd come home from work and we'd get in the pool with the kids every night.

On the weekends, we were going out to the local lakes. We were going hiking with the kids.

About a month into my job, I had to do my final step of in-processing, which was my physical evaluation.

I went back into a room with a nurse. She asked me some questions, went over my case history,

and she actually noted that I was one of the healthiest people she's ever seen going through this process.

I was fully immunized when I started my position at Fort Hood.

I had a fax down all of my newsation records. However, that was a separate department than who was doing my physical.
