Chris Dyer. Chris is Emeritus professor of history at the University of Leicester and a leading expert in medieval economic and social history.

His books include everyday life in medieval England and making a living in the middle ages.

It's a pleasure to be here.

So let's jump in with the first question, which is from Frank I-Karsa, who asked what was a typical

day for the average person. So a big question to start with and I don't know how easy that is to answer.

I suppose the first thing to say is that many of us live a very routine life in modern times.

You're doing the same thing roughly every day.

We go, when there isn't a virus around,

we go to work, we start at nine,

we finish at five, we go back home.

It's not like that in the middle ages.

There's a constant change with the seasons from through the year.

Most people are involved in farming most people are in agriculture and of course

that means the farming year goes through a tremendous cycle of plowing and

sewing and harvesting and all the rest of it through the year. So really there isn't a typical day,
