This is CBSI in the world. I'm John Batchford, Savakia, part of the European Union, part

of NATO. And following election say, our questions raised about the unanimity of support

in the EU in NATO for the war in Ukraine. I welcome Judy Demsie, the editor-in-chief

of Strategic Europe that is the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Judy is in Berlin

watching these European elections. They have many different kinds of elections in Europe.

Right now we're concentrating on the election, the apparent return to power of a former

prime minister, Robert Fiko. That is the best pronunciation until Judy helps me get

it right. He has advertised what is called a pro-Russian agenda that requires explanation.

And that raised the question marks throughout the EU about support for Keef. I mentioned

that Joseph Borrell, the chief diplomat of the EU, made a quick visit to Keef in these

last hours with a delegation to reinforce the support for Ukraine. However, Judy, a very

good day to you. These are European matters moving very quickly. And that's why I need Strategic

Europe to help me. What is the weight of the Savakia election, meaning for the rest of

the EU? It's very difficult to tell from this distance. Good day to you, Judy.

Good day, John. And thank you very much for having me on your great show. Okay. Savakia

is a very small country in Central Europe. It's joined the EU by the skin of its teeth

and NATO by the skin of its teeth in 2004, because it's had a huge record of corruption,

of oligarchs, of lack of democracy, but they cleaned it up and they joined. And over

the years, it's been up and down between liberal democratic leadership and rather authoritarian

or populist. And all of a sudden, this person called Robert Feetzel, the former prime minister,

who was allegedly responsible for killing two, getting two journalists killed, investigative

journalists, he won the election. And there was huge amount of propaganda from the Russian
