Authorities say that among the cash seized was a suitcase in a Brussels hotel room containing several hundred thousand euros.

The scandal is completely overshadowing this week's meeting of the European Parliament.

Speaking at the opening session in Strasbourg, its president Roberto Metzolo said that staff had been working with the authorities to break up the alleged criminal network for some time.

She also sought to take a hard line against corruption announcing an internal investigation and plans for reform.

While we can always look to increase deterrence and transparency, there will always be some for whom a bag of cash is always worth the risk.
