Summary

Philosopher, professor, and author, Dr. Gregory Shaw enters the mind meld!

Video Episode 👈

Gregory Shaw is the author of Theurgy and the Soul the Neoplatonism of Iamblichus, and his latest, Hellenic Tantra. He's a world-renowned expert on Neoplatonism, particularly the mysterious philosopher-sage, Iamblichus of Chalcis. Unlike his Platonic predecessors (apparently), Iamblichus engaged heavily in ritual esoteric practices. The heart of said practices were mysterious rites known as “theurgy.” A Greek word that translates to something like "god-working."

Though no one knows exactly what these practices were, there is a great deal we do know thanks to Iamblichus' extant writings and scholars like Shaw.

Now administering third eye drops. There's something in Plato and he's very explicit about it where you realizes it beyond our rational explanation of things, there's a deeper understanding

0:26.3

that can never be explained but can only be experienced. And once you've experienced it,

0:32.2

then you hear all and look at all of these rational explanations

0:35.8

and you can read them from a different point of view.

0:39.0

Because you're not outside looking in, but you're inside seeing how those discourses express who you really are.

0:46.8

I think today our culture needs to feel a sense of meaning in life. Our religions are, they work for some people and it's

0:56.5

beautiful and I'm glad that it does work for some people. And science is basically

1:01.4

dominating the discourse and it's just information and what

1:06.7

Platonism is it's it's not about information it's about the sound of the soul

1:12.4

connecting to other souls and rationality is just a

1:16.7

vehicle through which that those deeper sounds are expressed.

1:21.1

Welcome back to the transmission, my friends.

1:23.2

What is it about ancient mysteries and esoteric secrets that we find so compelling?

1:32.0

I mean, on one hand, I think it's obvious we suspect that said

1:35.9

ancients you know fat air quotes around that phrase we suspect that they had some real connection to the mystery or to the

1:46.7

divine that we've now lost. I mean how is that idea not magnetic in a time where so many of us are just psycho-spiritually,

1:56.6

secretly parched. On the other hand though I really think that if 95% of us found

2:01.7

what we were looking for we wouldn't even really know what to do with it,

2:05.8

or we would be too afraid to follow that mystery because it would probably require doing

2:12.0

things way too disruptive, living a way of life that really

2:17.0

would not harmonize with modern obligations very well.

2:21.5

But there are ways to split the difference I think and that's
