| 0:00.0 | This is Science Friday. I'm Iraflato. It's been less than a week since the eruption of the underwater |
| 0:05.6 | volcano Hungatanga, Hungha, Hapai. An international aid is only just starting to reach the archipelago |
| 0:12.6 | that makes up the kingdom of Tonga. The blast from the eruption had the force of an estimated |
| 0:17.9 | 10 million tons of TNT, spit volcanic debris as high as 34 miles up |
| 0:24.1 | and sent tsunami waves as far away as Japan and Peru. This eruption was also one of the |
| 0:30.5 | most documented volcanoes in history. Numerous satellites and other sensors caught the explosion. |
| 0:36.8 | And the data from those sensors may help us understand volcanoes like this one better than we ever have before. |
| 0:44.5 | With me is Umer Erfahn, staff writer for Vox. |
| 0:47.2 | Welcome back, Omer. |
| 0:48.5 | Hi, Ira, thanks for having me back. |
| 0:50.7 | Let's talk about this disaster that hit an inhabited archipelago where only a few people were killed. |

| 1:10.7 | So given the scale of this, |
| 1:12.4 | it's been quite remarkable that so few people have been hurt outright. But we've also had a very difficult |
| 1:17.6 | time getting in touch with Tonga because there's an undersea communications cable that was severed |
| 1:22.2 | during this eruption. And so a lot of the feedback they've been getting from outside has been |
| 1:27.1 | from overhead flights and things like that. |
| 1:29.1 | And since eight flights have started getting in this week, the big concern right now is COVID because, you know, the Tonga as an island nation has managed to largely avoid it. |
| 1:37.9 | They've only had one confirmed COVID-19 case. |
| 1:40.7 | And so they're trying to delicately balance, you know, recovery from this disaster |
