I'm your host Matt Smith and with me today is Dr. R. Rianna Evans,

senior lecturer in classics and ancient History at Latrobe University.

After his year as Consul, Caesar heads north to govern the province of Kiss Alpine Gaul.

He will spend years fighting against the Gaulish tribes, extending the empire's domain and

establishing his reputation as a mighty leader.

We now give an introductory episode to the text that he wrote.

Here's Reardon Evans. Oh, no, no. you're We have two texts by Julius Caesar. We've got two of his war

commentaries on the war in Gaul and the civil war. So the one we're going to

discuss is the war in Gaul, which we tend to call the Gaelic war. So the one we're going to discuss is the war in Gaul, which we tend to call the Gallic War, or the Bellum Gallicum.

And it's really important because it is a first person insight into what it was to be a Roman commander actually in the field.
