Summary

And we're back!  Tonight's episode features: SCOTUS preview: though many have missed it, SCOTUS is in fact back in session very soon, and we have a preview of security-related petitions and some early grants as well. Trumplandia: Well, Rod Rosenstein sure was the subject of loads of speculation this week, and it soon became quite clear that it is time for...a refresher regarding the TWO DISTINCT chains of succession (and related issues) for his TWO DISTINCT functions (Deputy AG and, quite separately, Acting AG in relation to the Russia investigation). The Cybers: Not one but two "cyber strategies" dropped last week.  The National Cyber Strategy sure looks like John Bolton did not write all of it, and the DOD Cyber Strategy has some very interesting language relating to something called..."defense forward"? Mil Coms: What's this about conducting hearings stateside??? DOJ National Security Division updates: a chlorine gas bomb, a NSA security breach, and an unregistered agent of Beijing. But we know you stuck around for the frivolity, and we've got a double-dose this week: MLB playoff predictions, and--thanks to our friends at The Intrepid Podcast--a debate about what makes something a pirate movie.  We don't think that word means what they think it means!

Hello from Austin and welcome to episode 92 of the National Security Law podcast, brought to you by the Strauss Center at the University of Texas.

0:18.9

It's Tuesday evening, September 25th. I'm Bobby Chesney.

0:22.8

Podcast night. Who are you? I'm Steve Lodick. Ah, you're a young-looking man.

0:27.8

I am three hours away from beginning my 40th trip around the sun. So I've got, I've got,

0:35.3

I've got three more hours of being 38. So we might as well

0:37.9

spend at least some of that recording a podcast. So I feel like if I'd known that earlier and I

0:41.7

didn't, I would have insisted we record at midnight and like do shots on the air at midnight.

0:46.4

Yeah, because that's why I want to start my 30, I want to start celebrating my 39th birthday

0:50.0

by having shots at midnight. That's exactly. In my office. That's exactly how you should.

0:54.6

That's pretty depressing.

0:55.3

Yeah, that might help you with your lecture preparation for tomorrow.

0:58.2

So are you teaching on your birthday?

1:00.3

I'm not teaching the semester.

1:01.7

You have this myth in your head that I have like this master schedule.

1:06.3

Dude, you're here all the time.

1:07.6

Well, don't tell Karen.

1:10.7

Wait, where does she think you are right now? I'm heading over to

1:14.4

Central Market and Whole Foods. I'll be right back. It would be, I mean, it would be funny if I actually

1:19.7

had a social life and, you know, was actually out doing something legitimately social. She actually

1:25.6

probably wouldn't mind if I was out doing something

1:27.7

social. Recording a podcast, I don't know how she feels about that. I think we both have to admit

1:31.0

this is a major part of our social life. And you know, I wouldn't have it any other way.
