Summary

"People see wearing a mask as a sign that you're a good person... ‘An example of my moral character. This gives me a pedestal over other people who DON'T do this because they are irresponsible and selfish, but I'm not, because look at my mask.' It doesn't matter that masks don't work to prevent transmision of a virus. Somehow that's insconsequential. Fauci says it's a 'symbol.' I don't know about you guys, but if it doesn't work, I'm not gonna do it — I'm not gonna do something just for symbolism." 🗣 Today I talk about the terms "virtue signaling" and "performative allyship." I discuss them both as it relates to mask-wearing during Covid and the public display of support for racial equality in the country. I share some quotes from writers covering these terms and also use real world examples. (Warning: if you're guilty of virtue signaling, you may be triggered). 🤭

Okay, let's do this. Hey everyone, welcome to another episode of what they aren't telling you with Melissa Floyd.

0:19.0

I am here today, by myself by the way because not every episode is going to be an

0:25.8

interview I love interviews I love bringing other people's perspective to the

0:31.6

table and discussing things. But some of these episodes are going to be also just

0:36.7

me breaking down some data, some statistics, or giving you facts in an audio version just like I would do on my posts on

0:45.0

Facebook or Instagram. So today is one of my I should say favorite topics to discuss perhaps but not for the reasons you would think

0:59.8

not because it's a good thing but because I find it very laughable.

1:04.4

So what I want to talk about today is virtue signaling.

1:11.4

Virtue signaling, otherwise known as performative allyship.

1:17.0

These are some big phrases and new to a lot of people but these are terms that existed

1:25.6

before George Floyd before COVID these are terms that have been around for a while.

1:33.0

In fact, I'm starting to wonder if perhaps they were created

1:39.0

like just before four years ago when a lot of social justice extremists kind of came

1:45.3

through social media and had a brand new language that everybody needed to know and

1:51.6

were attacking people with all this terminology.

1:55.6

Things like tone policing, stay in your lane,

2:01.4

white privilege, white fragility, and other terms.

2:07.8

In fact, every time I see somebody

2:10.5

start to use one of those terms, I'm instantly triggered. I'm not going to lie.

2:15.0

Because four years ago, I saw all this happen online in a particular online baby-wearing community where a bunch of people just came through and literally just

2:26.4

decimated it took over

2:29.6

everything was cultural appropriation everything was ableist everything was racist. Everything was racist. All the white people needed to be quiet.
