she begins by writing, quote, one need not be a chamber to be haunted, unquote. It is an arresting line that just grabs us

immediately, because there is such truth in its simple assertion. Dickinson here was writing in the

mid to late 19th century, a time when interest in the spiritual realm and things like table

tapings, spirit boards, and seances

were on the rise. But even then, decades before Freud's popularization of psychoanalysis

and the study of the unconscious mind, Dickinson knew what was up. She understood that the idea

of a haunted house was indeed a scary one, great for a Christmas time ghost
