Summary

We look West at Spain, Gaul and Italy to see what has changed since 600AD. Then we head into the Balkans to peer into the darkness and try to understand who lived there.

0:35.7	It's time to finally turn our gaze away from the civilizational earthquake
0:43.9	taking place in the Eastern Mediterranean and look westward.
0:48.6	Since the fall of Marie since 602, the Byzantines had barely had time to deal with events
0:53.9	to the west of Constantinople. Constance II had tried briefly by moving to Sicily,
1:00.5	but apart from his failed efforts, the Romans were utterly preoccupied by the East.
1:06.0	So today we travel west to briefly examine what was going on in the former lands of the
1:11.5	Western Empire and what remained of Byzantine holdings in Italy, Africa and the Balkans.

1:24.1	It's a tiny notch ahead of our story as it's showing Europe in 700 AD
1:29.5	and we stop the century at 695. That's no big deal though and it should give you a good sense
1:35.7	of what's happened. The map was made by Thomas Lessman, the same man who gave
1:41.4	us the maps of the world at 600 and 500 AD. Although I gave credit to those maps on the website,
