The Divine is a graphic novel which tells the story of two child soldiers

and an explosives expert in a fictional Southeast Asian country.

Atalka Lahokski writes for NPR, quote,

The Divine relies on the Hanukkah's gorgeous art for its appeal.

Their renderings of the story's supernatural elements leave nothing to the imagination.

Spidery precise lines invest the characters with what depth they do have, and the

color scheme is like a punch in the face. The artwork's flat style and overwhelming deep hues

make the whole book seem to smolder. Today we're joined by Asaf Hanukkah, co-author of the

divine, together with his brother Tomer and Boaz-Lavi.

The Divine received the prestigious International Manga Award in Japan.

Asaf's work has been published in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time, and Rolling Stone.

And his most recent graphic novel, The Realist, was awarded the 2016 Eisner Prize.

He joins us today to talk about his inspirations, his career, and his successes, which weren't

reached without a fair share of struggle.
