Hello, my name's Lucy Tate and I'm garden manager here at RHS Garden Wisley. Another top tip for August is to keep an eye on the plants, on those woody perennials you put in last autumn. The hot weather

that we have at this time of year will really stress out those plants and they may need extra watering,

especially coniferous plants, so conifers, anything with evergreen leaves that are very late to show any drought deficiencies.

So just go and check them at the base, make sure they're well watered, and you've got a good mulch to cover up and ensure they don't get too dry.

So when I talk about a mulch, what you want to do is clear your area of weeds around the base of your tree, water at that point

so that any mulch that you put on top, which could be a nice bark chip or some homegrown
