Exhibitors and attendees alike were happy to make a triumphant return to the Sands. It wasn’t the most dramatic show, but in a positive sense. The new lab-grown pavilion shows acceptance of this product entering the market, and conversations about lab-grown diamonds are maturing. There’s less clash and controversy, rather a deepening of the sustainability and tracing conversations. Interview Clip: Ben Hakman from Diamond DNABen Hakman explains the way things have been evolving in different price points and categories of lab-grown diamonds. He believes the future is moving towards transparency regarding grow type, treatment type, and country of origin. Thoughts on the Lightbox PresentationRob gives his reactions to the Lightbox presentation. Some thought that De Beers’ aggressive pricing last year was intended to push the lab-grown pricing down. Their perspective is that the pricing will come down anyway, and when it does, they will be well situated because they’ve had a chance to build their brand. That said, Rob has heard some wildly different predictions for lab-grown over the past few years. Victoria comments on the progress since last year’s presentation. Interview Clip: Niveet Nagpal from Omi Gems and Omi PrivéPeople are loving the colored stones, rarer gems, and edgier designs. People aren’t shying away from more interesting pieces that tell a story.

My name is Rob Bates. I'm the news director of JCPK and JCP online.

0:36.6

And I'm Victoria Gimelsky, editor-in-chief of J-CK anday and JCP Online. And I'm Victoria Gamelski, editor and chief of JCPK and JCP

0:40.6

Online. And I'm actually speaking from my home office in Los Angeles. Co-host on the coast.

0:46.4

That's right. That's right. I returned from Vegas last Tuesday, June 4th. I feel like I could still

0:53.1

sleep for days. I'm still recovering also.

0:56.1

Yeah, it rocked me. I mean, Vegas always feels like a week in a black hole that's, you know,

1:02.2

unrelated to anything else going on in the world. No news seeps in, nothing, no light practically,

1:07.6

at least no natural light. It's very fun. It's very demanding. And honestly,

1:12.8

this year felt almost, you know, times 10. I don't know if that's just because we were in that

1:17.8

sort of our new old home at the Sands Expo in Venetian or if it was just a full-on Vegas as they all

1:25.2

are. What did you think, Rob? Did it feel sort of more intense for you

1:28.7

this year or kind of the same? You know, they're always very intense and especially, you know,

1:34.4

it used to be a lot longer. So now that it's a little bit more compressed, it definitely feels

1:39.4

like a compressed couple days. It took more than I expected to adjust, but once I adjusted, it felt very natural to be back

1:46.5

at the sands, and you don't feel like you kind of lost anything from going to the mandalay to the sands.

1:52.0

I mean, it's a perfectly nice place. You're kind of more in the heart of the action, and it's

1:57.5

easier to get around. So the first day, like finding my way out of the Venetian was

2:02.5

was a little, I think it took like 20 minutes to get out of there just because, you know, I was

2:07.3

like with boats and I don't know where they had me. But, you know, once I got out of there, it was

2:12.9

okay. The wonderful thing about being, I stayed at the Palazzo, and I think people saying at the Venetian more or less had the same experience, was that I could be in my room and 10 minutes later be at an appointment on the show floor, which at Manilae Bay, that was impossible.

2:27.9

It was really at least 20 minutes to walk from where you were to, you know, get anywhere on the show floor.
