Summary

Graeme Hall gets a voice note from a listener who’s expecting a baby very soon; he wonders how he should prepare his Labrador for the new arrival. Graeme explains how to get the dog used to the idea in advance, as well as how to introduce her to the baby for the first time. Plus how should you train children to be good with dogs? What is it they need to understand about how to approach dogs, and how to make sure they’re sending the dog the same signals as the rest of the family? Do you have a question for The Dogfather? Send Graeme a voice note and a video of your pesky pooch to [email protected].

Hello and welcome to this Talking Dogs. I'm Graham Hall, although there's a chance you might know me better as the dog father.

I'm very determined to make sure all dogs and people live together in perfect harmony,

I've had a really good question from Chris. Hi, Graham. My name is Chris. And me and my wife have an 18-month-old Red Fox Labrador Retriever, who is from a working stock background.

Later this year, me and my wife will be bringing home our first child.

We were hoping that you may be able to provide some advice as to how it would be best to prepare Millie

for the arrival of a new child in the house. She's generally a very calm dog, particularly in the

1:36.3

house, but given her working background and her age at 18 months old, she can be quite excitable. Any advice you could provide us would be

1:47.7

very much welcomed. Thanks, Graham. Great. Thanks for your query, Chris. That's Brill.

1:51.8

Sounds like you're from Welsh Wales. I've been in Wales a lot recently working. So a Red

1:57.6

Fox Labrador called Millie. For people who don't know, the Red Fox ones are quite rare really, and as the name suggests,

2:04.6

they're the sort of colour of a fox, quite often a little bit more edgy than some Labradors.

2:09.6

You know, your typical sort of yellow Labradors very easy going and all that kind of thing.

2:14.6

Chocolate ones are along to themselves.

2:16.6

And the Red Fox ones are a bit

2:19.3

more on the go, a bit more excitable usually. So she's quite a chilled one, which is great news.
